Should I Remove My Chimney Stack?

If your chimney stack is in real poor shape then it may make more sense to remove the stack completely rather than having it restored or rebuilt. Rebuilding a chimney stack is a lot of work that takes time and money. You also have to have building control involved because the work is structural.

If your chimney stack is shared you will need to have a chat with your neighbour and come to an agreement on the work and the cost. If you are thinking about removing the chimney stack on your side only then think again as it barely makes sense, looks awful, and it may make the remaining half of the chimney stack vulnerable to toppling over in high winds. In effect, you should remove all of the chimney stack or rebuild.

You should also keep in mind that you may need planning to remove a chimney stack. It depends on where you live and if the location is subject to article 4 restrictions or has permitted development rights withdrawn like in a conservation area then you will need drawings and a planning application.
