CHIMNEY BREAST REMOVAL STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
Taking out a chimney breast can be great idea as it will provide you with more space and allow you the opportunity to modernise and create a room with a more modern feel. However, all structural work to a property requires an engineering design and calculations for Building Control and the builders.
AVONPRESS will be happy to quote for removing your chimney breast/s and provide you with additional quotes for Engineering and Party Wall Services if required.
Browse the diagrams below to see how chimney stacks are supported in order to remove a chimney breast.
REMOVING CHIMNEY BREAST DOWNSTAIRS ONLY
Taking out a chimney breast on the ground floor is simple enough providing you follow the engineers design and calculations for the steel and padstones. In most cases it is a simple matter of installing a steel beam next to the ceiling.
The beam sits on lintels or padstones on load bearing walls much the same as the diagram on the left.
REMOVING CHIMNEY BREAST TO GROUND & 1ST FLOOR
When you take out 2 chimney breasts you generally support in the attic space. Again, the most common type of support is a section of steel running front to back sitting on padstones on load bearing walls.
The steel section is generally lighter as there is less to support with both chimney breasts gone.

REMOVING 4 CHIMNEY BREASTS TO AN AVERAGE 3 BED HOUSE
Removing 4 chimney breasts will have a massive impact on your home as it will allow you to modernise downstairs and make better use of the bedrooms upstairs with wall to wall wardrobes and the like.
If you look at the diagram to the left you will see it is a relatively simple affair with 2 sections of steel and 3 padstones.

REMOVING All CHIMNEY BREASTS INCLUDING IN THE ATTIC AND THE CHIMNEY STACK ON THE ROOF
When you remove all the chimney breasts, including the chimney flue in the attic and the chimney stack on the roof, you won't need to support anything. Most likely this means no engineering design or calcs.
If you want to remove all the chimney breasts it is generally a good idea to remove everything rather than to be installing steelwork to support elements that you will never need.
